Pay It Forwards

Welcome to Issue 82 of Yath’s Blogletter, a newsletter where we explore mindful self-growth. I hope you’re having an awesome day!

Hi friends,

It is highly likely that somewhere along your journey, someone has helped you in some way that has enabled you to get to where you are today.

I can remember vividly from high school, when I was applying to medical school, a guy in the year above had got into UCL in the last cycle. He had what I wanted; the ins-and-outs of how to secure my very own place at UCL Medical School. Luckily for me, I approached him and he willingly gave me a lot of helpful advice and mentored me during my application.

Only when I later accepted my UCL offer and started my first term on campus, I realised what a great thing he had done for me.

Almost like a right of passage, I made it my responsibility that year to help at least one other person get into medical school. I did exactly that starting with a few of the guys in the year below at my secondary school and then some random people who'd messaged me online. When I found out these people had also secured medical school offers, it gave me this sense of satisfaction that felt genuinely rewarding in a hard to describe way but one that filled my heart with warmth. It made me feel like a 'good-human'.

This brings me to my reflection this week, it's that always in life we find ourselves at many cross paths or situations we cannot navigate without the help of others. More often than not, others are willing to help when we ask politely. But, how often do we make it our responsibility to help others in their own times of need?

It's a two-way street, but it shouldn't be monitored - that makes for an unhealthy transactional relationship. It's also oddly satisfying knowing you've helped a fellow earth dweller. Pay it forwards and don't keep tabs.

Quote of the week:

Make stuff you love and talk about stuff you love and you’ll attract people who love that kind of stuff. It’s that simple.

Question of the week:

Would you rather optimise your life for money or time freedom?

That’s all for this week - be safe, be happy!
