Spend a Little More for Quality of Life

Dear friends,

I want to tell you about an innocent “expensive” purchase I made that turned out to be one of my most valuable and reliable purchases. In 2019, I bought an expensive pair of Nike trainers for £129. They were black with white soles and laceless. Meaning they were effortless to slip on and the colour meant that they easily matched most outfits. To this day, I’ve worn these trainers 600+ times and now they remain my go-to for work or a quick dash into town. After 3 years of solid use, they remain comfortable, in good shape, and probably have another 5+ years of usage in them.

Now the message here is — it pays to invest in quality. We all want to save money and be frugal, but sometimes we should go all out on important purchases. I would say these pair of trainers have improved my quality of life and so have other good quality purchases such as my AirPods Pro or Knomo Thurloe Backpack. It might seem counterintuitive at first, but spending a little bit more on things we frequently use can be beneficial both in the short and long term.

For example, I could have probably bought a similar pair of trainers in 2019 for half or even a third of the price. But more likely than not, I would not have those cheaper pair of trainers today because maybe it wasn’t that comfortable, didn’t last the test of time, or wasn’t an enjoyable experience to wear.  Over time, it can make a big difference in your daily life and in the case of trainers prevent chronic health issues like plantar fascitis or tendonitis.

In addition, spending extra on items like clothing and furniture can be a great way to make a statement about your style. Investing in well-made clothing helps create a more timeless look that can be worn for multiple seasons. I’m not talking about trash fast-fashion designer items, but more the high quality and highly functional items. Similarly, spending a little bit more on furniture can mean the difference between a piece of furniture that just does the job and one that feels solid and makes your home more inviting.

Finally, spending more on things like food, drinks and leisure can be a great way to get a better product or experience. For instance, buying organic food, higher-quality cuts of meat, or freshly made drinks can make all the difference in terms of flavour and nutrition. In terms of leisure, it's often worth spending a little extra to get access to a really nice gym for example, where you might have a more inviting and pleasurable experience. Overall, this might further encourage you to frequent the gym.

The key is to find the balance between indulging in luxury items and being frugal. Spending a bit more on things that we frequently use can be a great way to improve our quality of life and make sure we're getting the most out of our purchases.
