The Thief of Happiness

Dear friends,

They say comparison is the thief of joy, and for good reason. When we compare ourselves to others, it's easy to focus on the ways in which we fall short. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction, which can steal our joy and make us miserable.

One of the reasons comparison is so detrimental is that it sets us up for a losing game. No matter how successful or accomplished we are, there will always be someone who is more successful or accomplished than we are. This means that we can never truly win the game of comparison, and we will always be left feeling like we're not good enough.

Another reason comparison is harmful is that it distracts us from our own lives and goals. When we're busy comparing ourselves to others, we're not focusing on our own growth and development. This means that we're not working towards our own goals and dreams, which can leave us feeling unfulfilled and unhappy. It's important to remember that everyone's journey is unique, and comparing ourselves to others is not productive.

Have you ever found yourself scrolling through social media, comparing your life to others' perfect lives? Or maybe you're in a group setting and feel inferior to those around you. So how do we combat this thief of joy? One way is to practice gratitude. By focusing on what we have, rather than what we lack, we can shift our perspective and find joy in the present moment.

Another way is to reframe our thoughts. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we can focus on our own progress and growth. Celebrate small victories and remind yourself of your unique talents and qualities.

Lastly, we can limit our exposure to comparison traps. This may mean taking a break from social media, avoiding certain situations or people that trigger comparison, or simply being mindful of your thoughts and redirecting them when necessary.

In short, comparison is the thief of joy because it sets us up for failure, distracts us from our own lives, and leaves us feeling unfulfilled. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should focus on our own goals and strive to be the best versions of ourselves. This will allow us to find joy in our own lives and be truly happy.

Gratitude:

This week, I am grateful for the Fifa World Cup. We’re reaching the QF stages and England are still in the tournament. Politics and controversy aside, football has the power to bring together communities and cultivate a feeling of patriotism, courage, and an all-round positive aura. Hopefully, it’ll be coming home.
